Call 2 Care are so fortunate to host students from the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), an organisation affiliated with the University of Cape Town. The partnership between CIEE and Call 2 Care allows students to volunteer in the field of community development at Call 2 Care, while also completing an academic seminar to enhance their overall internship experience. We are so excited to already see results of the great work that the students have learned and applied to Call 2 Care's The Philile Project.
During the last community development engagement event, as part of Call 2 Care's The Philile Project, students implemented a structured framework for effective learning and lesson planning at the after school program hosted at Siseko Educare, Gugulethu. The program currently accommodates over 30 primary School children from the ages of 7 years to 13 years from within the Gugulethu community. This program was developed to provide these children with a stimulating after school activity as well as a safe and nurturing environment while they wait for their parents to come home from work. The soft skills that are encouraged are responsibility and ownership, creative expression, self confidence and trust in each other and themselves with interaction with the water wise vegetable gardens implemented thanks to Call 2 Care's The iGardi Project. We are so fortunate to have already seen the results of the CIEE students application of theory into practice and look forward to seeing and reporting the results ahead.
The internship offered by the CIEE is designed for students to learn more about South Africa, its people, and the social transformations here in the past 15 years with a combination of coursework and integrated community work. Students come away with a strong grasp of South African history, politics, educational challenges, and values and traditions. The program begins with theoretical work that provides a foundation for projects and an understanding of the challenges of day life in Cape Town. Then students put theory into practice within community projects offered by Call 2 Care.
